How did you get acquainted with guitar playing?
I've always had a keen interest in pop music, and I really wanted to learn an instrument so that I could sing-and-play for my own entertainment.
When I graduated as a student and started entering the working world, I also wanted to maintain a hobby outside of my job.
That was when I became determined to pick up a new skill.
Describe your first experience playing on a guitar.
The first time I played guitar was when I borrowed my friend's instrument at her home.
I tried a few chords with her guidance and I remember that I couldn't last very long because it was too painful!
What is the best thing about being a guitarist?
I get a huge sense of satisfaction from learning new songs and being able to play as instrumentalist for other singers.
Playing the guitar has also broadened my knowledge of pop music, as I get in touch with different genres of music in different languages when singers have various styles and song requests.
It is also extremely rewarding to play in a band and work with other musicians to re-create music with a style of our own.
Describe your most memorable guitar-related incident.
I had just brought my new (current) guitar to its first ever gig, and I put it on a stand off-stage when it was not my turn to play. It was sitting nicely at first, yet for some reason, in the middle of a friend's performance, it suddenly lost its balance and fell flat face down!!! I was so horrified as it was barely a week old!
Now I have to ban that song from all my gigs :P
How many guitars do you currently own?
2. My current one is Faith Naked Venus.
If your house is on fire, which one would you run out with? Why?
Definitely my current faith. It has great sentimental value and I still have no intention of replacing it. I love its sound!
First song you learned to play on guitar: First proper song I learnt to play by myself would be 只怕想家 by 黄美珍.
Song you love to play most on guitar: 林忆莲 - 纸飞机. I love the details and light-hearted swing feel that is quite rarely used in Mandarin pop.
Most difficult song you have played on guitar: 太聪明 by 陈绮贞. Both the level of chords and fingerstyle are very challenging.
Tips for aspiring guitarists: Never give up! It may be painful at the initial stages, but once you get past it, there is so much you gain from simply being able to learn and play your own favourite songs.
